Easy Ideas For Holiday Decorating

Just discussing with my neighbor how easy it would be to Deck the Halls if we would always put the same things in the same places…Why reinvent the wheel? Unfortunately or fortunately a creative mind never seems to stop. I try to start with Fall and then just change a few greens and colors to make this transformation a little easier and even with a few changes move right into Spring. Some of the basics for this production….and George says it is a production not using the same word.. are items you can leave out all year.

Globes

Globes or Cloches can really great to showcase an item and it is so easy to change the contents as the seasons pass by. Pumpkin, to pinecone, to spring bulb, to seashell….all under the globe.

Books

I also love displaying special items that bring back memories. Polar Express Book and Photo of our girls always bring back those days.

Family Memories

Several years ago, I came home to find my Great Grandmother’s Christmas dishes set on our dining room table. My mother had been by and left this surprise. We use them every Christmas Eve and they remain on the table so I can see them every year with the help of globes and greens.

Easy Seasonal Change

Another seasonal item that is easy to change is any type of glass enclosure of any shape.

I already had this glass box I purchase years ago on a clearance rack…the bottom was missing so I just replaced it with a tray. I love making little scenes and sprinkle some snow…but the snow will need to disappear after Christmas….and spring bulbs will bloom… I have also put sand, shells, and succulents in the summer.

Greens will come down and remove all the Christmas trees and snow. I first saw these little tin houses in a display and waited until after Christmas to buy a few for 75% off. What a deal!

GOODBYE real trees

There has been one very big change in our house…no more live trees! For years we always had a live tree…and it was extremely tall! Andi, our oldest, insisted…INSISTED we keep this tradition. Being the loving parents we are, we promised her we would always get a live tree as long as she came home for the holidays. Well, it became much more difficult to get the tree home and in the stand without the help of our daughters and some of their friends. The trees kept getting more and more expensive and much more difficult to find the taller size. George and his loyal friend, Bill were getting a “little” older.

So with more pine needles in the carpet, wet stains on the carpet, allergies….you guessed it…Costco to the rescue. In just a few years, this tree has helped to save us $$$. It is even pretty with no ornaments. We are ready when the family comes home to decorate the tree. George is not frustrated with lights or completely exhausted after struggling with the tree…and Andi still comes home.
