Minimize and Design...Different Goals
My Inner Struggle with HOME Design and Minimizing
Let me share I have always been interested in HOME DESIGN. I think it may have started when I would visit my Great Grandmother’s house and she would let me explore for what I thought were treasures. I still have some of those treasures in my home today. In my own home I keep a collection of what I call transitional items in my lower level. I can walk through the shelves and can easily imagine where some items could be. I enjoy change. I am also very proud of hearing compliments from guests and then share the fact I have usually spent very little for a room design. If I decided to list our property, I would need to clear many items that make my house my home.
On the other hand, when helping a client transform their home to a product to sale for top dollar, I need to become a minimalist. During these times, I need to think of neutral colors, even when a room seems ready for photos, another item usually needs to be removed. A home and a product...two very different things. A home that is staged for top dollar is kind of like an empty canvas. It is an invitation for a buyer to design.
Designing and minimizing are both talents I utilize with buyers and sellers. I have learned to enjoy sharing both. I can help a buyer think of the potential of a room when touring homes to purchase. I currently have a buyer that looks for a “drop off” area close to the kitchen for coats, books, bags, etc. in every house we visit. I recently printed a photo of ideas for creating that space on almost any wall. I hope she can look past that one requirement that has become a deal breaker. I enjoy pointing out interesting furnishings in homes that I know can easily be replicated at a lower cost. I have even gone so far to accompany clients on home shopping after the closing.
